Two things come up in conversation when I tell people that I know how to optimize pages to appear well in search engines. Meta tags, and Keyword Density.
Within the search marketing community meta tags are known to have a de-emphasized importance, but many still believe that Keyword Density is an important factor in determining a pages ranking in search engines. This is simply not true.
Keyword Density measures the density of a keyword throughout the document, but ignores the proximity, distribution, and topical importance of where the keyword is being used.
In other words Keyword Density is mathematically not connected to relevancy. Which means that an incredibly smart and efficient company like Google isn't going to use it in the ranking of a web site.
